SWAB Board Disbanded By Polk Commissioners The Polk County Board of Commissioners Tuesday night disbanded the Solid Waste Advisory Board (SWAB) after an executive session meeting with Rutherford-Polk-McDowell District Health Department Director Clifford Fields. The district health department operates the county landfill which came under close scrutiny by the SWAB members. The vote to disband the board was 4-1 with board chairman Jeannie R. Martin voting against. Commissioner W. Kenneth Faulkner said the solid waste advisors had finished their job ahd that there was no sense in continuing to employ their services. "They did an excellent job," he said. "We have taken their advice. We have appointed a solid waste manager and we have begun a recycling program." Members of the Polk County Taxpayers Association commented after the motion was passed that perhaps the county- had killed the messenger after SWAB members aggressively compaigned against lax operation of the landfill. Faulkner said this was not the case. "We’ve been getting the same message all the time " he said. However. Jeannie Martin said she thought the SWAB Board still had work to do. Coldwell Banker President Earl Thompson announced Wednesday. Gaut-Butler sales associates Norma Gaut. Susie House and Valerie Thompson will join the residential sales staff at Coldwell Banker. "The professionalism and integrity of these three will allow us to strengthen our commitment to serving the community.” Thompson said Dick Gaut said he will move his property management operations to the Coldwell Banker building, at 937 South Trade Street. "This will give Norma. Valerie and Susie greater sales support." Dick Gaut said. Special guest will be Herschel S. "Scotty" Morgan, recently announced candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives seat. Election will be held this fall Mr. Morgan served with distinction in Japan. Okinawa, Korea and Vietnam. While serv ing in the US Air Force in Vietnam, he was captured and spent 7 years. 10 months and 9 days as a Prisoner of War. He was the second longest held Air Force prisoner in North Vietnam. On February 12. 1973 he was honorably released, returning home on the first aircraft to depart Hanoi. In 1974. Mr Morgan received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Science with minors in Business Administration and Physical Science. All members are invited.
